The Ponseti Method

While we have followed the surgical route for Scott's feet, it is well worth mentioning the Ponseti method. The Ponseti Method is a non-surgical method of correcting club feet. It involves the use of specialised manipulation and serial casting to stretch the tendons of the affected feet. When we found out about Scott's feet before he was born, I saw a little information on this method, but dismissed it as too new and quirky, and had full confidence in our surgeon. In hindsight, I can now see that the method is gaining in awareness and credibility, with many success stories reported, and I do wonder if it would have saved Scott from the surgeons knife. However, it is too late to swap treatment, and we are now aiming for the best possible feet our surgeon can provide.

If you have just found out about your baby's Talipes, then do investigate this method. Ponseti himself, is still alive, still active, and still contactable. There are now several Ponseti method trained orthopaedic consultants in the UK, though they are not necessarily conveniently located. (Mr. Gavin de Kiewiet is most widely spoken of, and is in Sunderland). Anyway, I am not an expert, but for more information and contact details, your best bet is to visit nosurgery4clubfoot, and also Yahoo! Groups  talipesuk .

The surgical route remains a well researched, and successful form of treatment. Do your research, speak to people (via Internet groups, etc) ask the right questions of your consultant, and make your own decision.
